The Family Allergy Clinic & Wellness Center offers testing for food allergies and environmental allergies. We offer allergy testing for infants, children, adults, and seniors. We are pediatric allergy specialists, offer allergy shots, allergy drops, and pain-free alternatives to allergy shots.
The Family Allergy Clinic & Wellness Center tests for environmental and food allergies via skin prick testing, also called scratch testing. Skin prick testing is the gold standard for allergy testing. This test is performed by using plastic applicators to prick the skin and determine whether or not an allergy exists. Grasses, weeds, trees, molds, pets, and insects are the most common allergens used in this type of testing. Typically, the tests are performed on the back or arms and takes about 20-30 minutes to perform.
To improve the accuracy of the test results, it is important to avoid antihistamines such as cetirizine, loratadine, fexofenadine, levocetirizine, diphenhydramine (Zyrtec, Claritin, Allegra, Xyzal, Benadryl) for about 3-5 days prior to allergy testing. Other medications that are important to avoid prior to testing are steroids (such as Prednisone or Kenalog), and some antidepressant medications. Please contact to our office about what medications are important to continue taking and which medications are important to temporarily stop taking prior to testing.
